Be Content
And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness:
for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the
things which he possesseth. - Luke 12:15

Greed is no
stranger to any of us, for to some degree we are
all infected with the malady that gripped Midas, the
legendary king.
Despite the fact that he already had great riches, Midas
wanted
more and he implored the gods to grant him the power
to transform
all that he touched to gold. His wish was granted,
and for a while he
was elated. Then, he tried to eat and his food
turned to gold, too.
"Rid me of
this curse," he begged, and the gods told him he
could be free of his golden touch if he would bathe in
a certain river.
When he did, he was relieved of his problem, as the ground
over
which the river rolled turned to gold. (That, according
to this legend,
is why sand is golden.)
Few people
are satisfied with their lot. Not even Adam and Eve
were content in their paradise. Yet, the wisdom
of the ages repeats
this truth again and again. THINGS cannot satisfy.
What, then, can
bring fulfillment and contentment? The Psalmist tells
us.
"Happy is
that people whose god is the Lord." When our god
is materialism and our goal is more earthly riches, we
chase an
elusive rainbow.

There are two ways to get enough: One is to accumulate
more and
more, the other is to desire less. - G.K. Chesterton.
"I have now disposed of all my property to my family.
There is one
thing more I wish I could give them and that is faith
in Jesus Christ. If
they had that and I had not given them a single shilling,
they would
have been rich; and if they had not that, and I had given
them all the
world, they would be poor indeed." - Patrick Henry

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be
content with
such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee. - Hebrews 13:5
